Looking to add a new member to your family? Small and furry? Big and bouncy? Choosing the right buddy for you is fun, but takes time, planning and lots of research. Get in touch with the wonderful, local team at Northern Rivers Animal Service and they’ll help you find your perfect match.

Northern Rivers Animal Services is a self-funded, not-for-profit, registered Charity run entirely by amazing and dedicated volunteers. NRAS commenced in October 2001 to provide foster care and the opportunity to re-home the abandoned, abused, lost and unwanted dogs and cats in the Northern Rivers.

Since 2001 NRAS has rehomed almost 4,000 companion animals and as well as rescuing dogs and cats from the council pounds and local surrenders, NRAS assist with the costs of desexing for people in genuine need of financial assistance to desex their pet.

Volunteers are always needed to foster animals (food and vet work provided) and to help out at their op shop in River Street, Ballina.

NRAS’ objectives are simple:

  • Raise the value of cats and dogs in society and improve the attitudes of humans towards animals through education
  • Work towards preventing the birth of unwanted kittens and puppies
  • Find safe and happy homes with responsible pet owners
  • Target zero euthanasia rates of all healthy & treatable cats & dogs

About NRAS

NRAS works with similar animal groups within the Northern Rivers region as well as local Councils to assist with fostering and re-homing companion animals.

Whilst NRAS is currently developing a Shelter in Ballina, the organisation will continue to operate on a fostering basis where voluntary carers provide temporary housing, shelter and comfort for its animals before they are ready or able to find a new family.

A strongly-held belief in the animal rescue community is that the only way to stop the high volume of surrendered and abandoned animals is to educate people on de-sexing.

NRAS provides a subsidised de-sexing program and discounted microchipping services to those suffering hardship, illness or difficult personal circumstances.

For contact details regarding Northern Rivers Vets committed to the NRAS Subsidised Desexing partnership, please email: nras@live.com.au or telephone (02) 6681 1860 weekdays between 10:00am & 4:00pm.

Adopting through NRAS

All companion animals that come into NRAS’ care are supported through our foster care system while they undergo assessment and all veterinary work. Our dedicated volunteer carers provide love, understanding and shelter whilst exposing and teaching these surrendered, and sometimes traumatised, animals to live a normal pet life.

Our animals remain with their foster carer until a permanent, loving home becomes available and are all de-sexed, vaccinated and microchipped before their adoption is finalised.

In order to adopt an NRAS animal, you must first complete an adoption questionnaire which will be reviewed and assessed by the NRAS team to match animals with suitable adoptive families.

All prospective Adoption visits and meetings with our NRAS representatives are by appointment ONLY.

Become a Foster Carer or Volunteer

NRAS is always in need of carers to provide temporary housing, shelter and comfort for animals before they go to their new family.  Complete support, including the provision of food and veterinary work, is given to foster carers. Volunteers are also welcome in either of the Ballina or Lismore Op shops; helping at community events or for general office duties in Ballina.

In addition to financial assistance that supports the purchase of food and veterinary work, NRAS is grateful for donations such as items suitable for re-sale in the Op Shops or prizes for fundraising & events.

Contact the Office to check on other items, such as stationery, etc. that would be useful to the group at the time.
