What’s On – Tony Backhouse & The Backroaders

April 27, 2018

Bringing the music home

1 x show at Byron Theatre – 7.30pm on Saturday 12th May
2 x shows at St Martin’s Church, Mullumbimby – 4.00pm & 7.30pm on Friday 11th May

Choir director, arranger and composer Tony Backhouse is known and loved in the Byron area after decades of Summersong Music Camp. He is a legend in the gospel a cappella tradition having founded and sung in groups like the Café to the Gate of Salvation, the Honeybees and the Heavenly Light Quartet.

Tony’s 55 piece choir is comprised of choristers who come together specifically for this tour. Most have sung with Tony over many years, whether on his tours of the African-American churches of America, or residencies in Fiji and Siena, or journeys into the Australian desert. These performances bring the music home. The inaugural Backroaders tour in May 2017 was incredible, as music directed by Tony always is. The superb repertoire is sung with deep love and arranged with great skill.

This will be a joyous night of gospel and soul and your $20 admission goes entirely to food relief programs in the Byron Bay and Mullumbimby areas. The Byron Theatre concert is in support of Liberation Larder, based in the Byron Community Centre.
